4-Week Ceramics Course for Adults (Wednesday Evenings)

Ceramics Course for Adults

Starting 7th March for 4 Weeks

Wednesday Evenings from 7pm - 9pm

For Beginners

This course will introduce the specific demands and rewards of working with clay – showing clearly what can and cannot be done with it.

The course will outline the main hand-building techniques (not throwing on the wheel) and surface decoration techniques.

It is process and material led, rather than project led. This means that students are free to choose their own themes for shapes and decoration.

Students are encouraged to bring their own source material for their personal projects but if they need guidance or inspiration this will be given. A collection of ceramics and books for reference will be available.

The students may expect to make some or all of the following:

  • a series of small tiles with various decorative techniques

  • a series of small “makers mark” stamps

  • a group of small slab-built pieces and/or some larger pieces

  • platters or bowls using slump moulds provided.

  • one or more coiled or pinched pots

  • sculptural work may also be made

A wide variety of surface decoration techniques will be studied over the 4-week course.

We will work with white or red earthenware clay and a range of coloured decorating slips as well as some highlights using stains.

All the work will be bisque fired. Selected work will be given a transparent glaze, and glaze fired.

Tutor: Matilda Moreton
Matilda graduated from the ceramics department of Central St Martin's College of Art and Design in 2004, with a degree show piece called Liquid History, which mapping the River Thames through Central London. Moving from west to east through history, a series of ancient to modern ceramic techniques reflect each historical period. The fourth panel, depicting the London's Docklands, used digital print technology and was purchased by CSM for the college collection.

Price: £95 for the whole course of 4 weeks including all materials.

A 10% discount applies when booking 2 or more places.
