You will create a small piece of 14cm square mosaic using the direct method. In order to be able to complete the mosaic within the given time the design must be simple such as a star, or a flower, or a heart or an object silhouette.

All materials will be supplied. We have design templates available on the day.  Alternatively, if you would like to work on your own design, please bring this printed out or as a drawing with you.

Our mosaic course covers

  • The direct method of mosaic

  • How to transform a design idea into a mosaic

One Day Mosaic Making with Shells (Saturday)

One Day Mosaic Making with Shells

Saturday, 14th Sept between 10am-5pm

For beginners. Work with shells - maybe found on your holiday - to create patterns in mosaic.

A one day course during which you will be able to make your own unique shell mosaic using the ‘direct method’ setting shells onto board using tile adhesive. As well as learning this mosaic technique, you will have the opportunity to explore the infinitely varied qualities of shells and how best to combine them to create beautiful patterns and surfaces .  Each student will work on individual projects and therefore the overall size and shape of your completed mosaic will vary according to the scale and intricacy of your design and choice of shells.

All equipment and materials will be provided and there will be a good range of shells for you to use but if you have your own shell collection then you are welcome to bring them along .

Tuition will be mainly individual, with group demonstrations where appropriate. Detailed hand-outs on this mosaic technique and suppliers of equipment and materials will be given.

Please note that you will not be able to take your mosaic home at the end of the day, as the tile adhesive will not have had time to dry sufficiently for you to transport it home safely and the shells are likely to fall out.

Arrangements for you pick up your mosaic at some stage during the following week can be discussed during the course- the school is open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Friday and also some evenings.

Tutor: Catherine Parkinson

Catherine Parkinson is a freelance mosaic artist and teacher, specialising in decorative patterns and the innovative use of mosaic materials and techniques. She has been working with mosaic for 22 years, coming from a textiles background having studied a degree in hand embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Besides teaching on our specialist short courses she also teaches in other adult education institutions and works on private and public commission. She has her own mosaic practice with works exhibited in galleries.
