Starting 8th May 2019, 6.00-8.30pm (half term break 22nd May)

This course is all about gardens and flowers and plants. Work with ceramics and vitreous glass, using nippers.

Mosaics have been used in gardens since the time of the Romans. They can be used to bring colour to a dark corner or add elegance to a balcony or roof terrace. You have a place for a mosaic in your outside space, however large or small.

In this six week course you will learn how to use the direct method of mosaic making to transform plant pots or to turn a plant saucer into a bird bath.  Or if you prefer, you can create a mosaic picture using gardens and nature as your inspiration.  This course is suitable for beginners and those with a little experience, but everyone is welcome!

This course covers

  • Which materials are suitable to go outside

  • How to use the direct method on a basic 3D form such as a plant pot

  • How to interpret and transform a photograph or drawing into a mosaic

  • How to use mosaic making tools

  • How to cut and lay mosaic tiles

  • How to apply basic techniques of andamento (mosaic flow) into your work

  • How to create a stunning work using colour theory

  • How to grout and clean your mosaic

The size of your mosaic will depend on the surface you choose, but it should be up to 25-30cm square in size. All materials will be supplied including ceramic and vitreous glass, crockery, plant saucers and pots, but you are welcome to bring your own ceramic or terracotta vessels to decorate (unglazed only). Please be sure to send a picture of these to us first so that we can tell you if they are suitable. If you have any broken crockery you would like to use in your design you are welcome to bring it along.

Portraits in Mosaic (Monday evening)

Portraits in Mosaic (Monday evening)

Portraits in Mosaics

Starting Monday 13th October from 6.30pm to 8.30pm for 10 weeks (on bank holiday 27th May we plan to have a class if this suits all students)

All levels welcome. Work with ceramics and vitreous glass, using nippers.

Creating portraits in mosaic is a great way to pay homage to a person of historical importance, an important family member or to celebrate a person in our local community.
Portraiture is a repeating genre in Roman, Greek and Byzantine mosaic including portraits of Emperors, depictions of gods and goddesses, and later on Christian themes. The durability and strength of mosaic created a long-lasting art-form viable for the representation of power, belief and aesthetics.

Learning aims

Students will learn how to systematically design and make a portrait with mosaic tiles, using ceramics and vitreous glass tiles. Thinking about abstraction while at the same time paying attention to detail will enhance the student's ability to make quick and refined artistic decisions. The course delivers technical, design and analytical skills to make a well designed and recognisable portrait in mosaic.

What students should be able to do at the end of the course:

  1. To understand the techniques and materials of mosaic: cutting tiles, using andamento and lines, working in the indirect method, how to grout a mosaic with this method

  2. To work closely from an image, and how to reproduce it best

  3. To understand the structure and composition of a portrait, and how best to translate this into mosaic

Tutor: Silvie Jacobi

Silvie has worked with our studio for more than 10 years on commissions and public works. Her particular expertise is to teach figurative mosaic, in particular portraits. She studied painting at Wimbledon College of Art where she completed her BA in Fine Art, and is also currently completing a PhD in Geography.
