Various Techniques Mosaic Course (Friday daytime)

Fridays starting 18th Jan from 1-4pm for 10 weeks (half term break 22nd Feb)

For beginners and improvers, who wish to explore a variety of mosaic techniques and materials.

A mosaic course for beginners and students with some experience of mosaic making who would like to expand their practice and learn a different technique. Students will work on their own individual project, emphasis will be placed on a personal approach to your design.

You will be able to make a mosaic choosing from one of the following techniques: direct, indirect, double indirect (into plastercine) or direct into tile adhesive. Cutting and shaping material with tile nippers will be taught, including how to form a curve. Use of the mosaic hammer and hardie to cut down stone and marble will also be covered.  You will be able to explore the expressive possibilities of mosaic in your use of ‘andamento’ (different ways of laying down your mosaic tesserae to create different effects).

  • There will be a wide range of materials available for you to use, including: Vitreous glass tiles, ceramic tiles, stone and marble and china.

  • Detailed information sheets will be available for you to take home on all techniques, cutting skills and 'andamento'.

  • Tuition will be mainly individual with group instruction and discussion where appropriate, with working samples on each technique shown.

  • All equipment and materials will be provided, although you are welcome to bring in any materials you may have that you would like to use. Information and advice will be given on suppliers of equipment and materials.

Please bring some images/sketches to the first session that you think you might like to use  as a basis for your mosaic design.

One Day Courses in Mosaic for Adults: Direct Method

Wednesdays from 10am-5pm, next dates

  • 23rd January

  • 13th March

For beginners and improvers. Work with ceramics and vitreous glass, using nippers.

Make a stunning mosaic out of a mosaic template, photograph or your original design whilst learning a variety of techniques, from classic to modern to create your own unique mosaic.

Mosaic is a slow paced art form and you don't need to be good at drawing as we teach different techniques to copy and transfer a design onto paper or wood base.

Our short courses take place in a large specialist mosaic studio, in which we give everyone individual attention and help on their project.

One day courses are suitable for people who are complete beginners wanting try a taster session to learn the basics of mosaic making and have a fun day. You will create a small piece of 14cm square mosaic using the direct method. In order to be able to complete the mosaic within the given time the design must be simple such as a star, or a flower, or a heart or an object silhouette.

All materials will be supplied. We have design templates available on the day.  Alternatively, if you would like to work on your own design, please bring this printed out or as a drawing with you.

Our mosaic course covers

  • The direct method of mosaic

  • How to transform a design idea into a mosaic

  • How to use mosaic making tools e.g. nippers

  • How to cut and lay ceramic and glass vitreous tiles

  • How to grout and complete your mosaic.
