4 Weeks Ceramics Hand building Course - Mondays all day (20 hours)
Mondays May 13th, May 20th, June 10th and June 17th
Time: 10am until 4pm
This course provides a general introduction to ceramics for beginners and further study of new ceramic materials and techniques for previous students. It will outline the main hand-building techniques (not throwing on the wheel) and surface decoration techniques. It is process and material led, rather than project led. This means that students are free to choose their own themes for shapes and decoration.
We will continue to use earthenware clay, slips and oxides and we will try out some new techniques such as marbling and monoprinting. We will also explore the new territory of stoneware clays and glazes
Students are encouraged to bring their own source material for their personal projects but if they need guidance or inspiration this will be given. A collection of ceramics and books for reference will be available.
The students may expect to make some or all of the following:
a series of small tiles with various decorative techniques
a series of small “makers mark” stamps
a group of small slab-built pieces and/or some larger pieces
platters or bowls using slump moulds provided
one or more coiled or pinched pots
sculptural work may also be made
