6 Week Mosaics for Gardens and Balconies
Starting 8th May 2019, 6.00-8.30pm (half term break 22nd May)
This course is all about gardens and flowers and plants. Work with ceramics and vitreous glass, using nippers.
Mosaics have been used in gardens since the time of the Romans. They can be used to bring colour to a dark corner or add elegance to a balcony or roof terrace. You have a place for a mosaic in your outside space, however large or small.
In this six week course you will learn how to use the direct method of mosaic making to transform plant pots or to turn a plant saucer into a bird bath. Or if you prefer, you can create a mosaic picture using gardens and nature as your inspiration. This course is suitable for beginners and those with a little experience, but everyone is welcome!
This course covers
Which materials are suitable to go outside
How to use the direct method on a basic 3D form such as a plant pot
How to interpret and transform a photograph or drawing into a mosaic
How to use mosaic making tools
How to cut and lay mosaic tiles
How to apply basic techniques of andamento (mosaic flow) into your work
How to create a stunning work using colour theory
How to grout and clean your mosaic
The size of your mosaic will depend on the surface you choose, but it should be up to 25-30cm square in size. All materials will be supplied including ceramic and vitreous glass, crockery, plant saucers and pots, but you are welcome to bring your own ceramic or terracotta vessels to decorate (unglazed only). Please be sure to send a picture of these to us first so that we can tell you if they are suitable. If you have any broken crockery you would like to use in your design you are welcome to bring it along.
