For beginners and improvers, who wish to explore a variety of mosaic techniques and materials.
A mosaic course for beginners and students with some experience of mosaic making who would like to expand their practice and learn a different technique. Students will work on their own individual project, emphasis will be placed on a personal approach to your design.
You will be able to make a mosaic choosing from one of the following techniques: direct, indirect, double indirect (into plastercine) or direct into tile adhesive. Cutting and shaping material with tile nippers will be taught, including how to form a curve. Use of the mosaic hammer and hardie to cut down stone and marble will also be covered. You will be able to explore the expressive possibilities of mosaic in your use of ‘andamento’ (different ways of laying down your mosaic tesserae to create different effects).
There will be a wide range of materials available for you to use, including: Vitreous glass tiles, ceramic tiles, stone and marble and china.
Detailed information sheets will be available for you to take home on all techniques, cutting skills and 'andamento'.
Tuition will be mainly individual with group instruction and discussion where appropriate, with working samples on each technique shown.
All equipment and materials will be provided, although you are welcome to bring in any materials you may have that you would like to use. Information and advice will be given on suppliers of equipment and materials.
Please bring some images/sketches to the first session that you think you might like to use as a basis for your mosaic design.
